Understanding and Working with our Emotions

Emotions are our mind and body’s natural way of responding to the world. They help our brain interpret what matters and how to respond. They interpret internal or external reality. Emotions are short lived, automatic responses that help us survive, connect and adapt. They are both biological and psychological: rooted in the body and shaped by our history and experiences.

This workbook is designed as a gentle companion to help you
understand, explore, name and reflect on the emotions that shape our lives.

You can use this workbook alongside therapy or on your own. There are explanations, examples and spaces for you to write about your own experiences. There is no right or wrong way to use it. Use a single chapter or all of them, and in the order that works for you. Take your time, pause when you need to and come back to it whenever you are
ready.

About the author

I’m José Rodríguez, a clinical psychologist who works with adults using psychodynamic psychotherapy, eye movement desensitisation reprocessing therapy (EMDR), and cognitive analytic therapy (CAT).

Over the years, I’ve seen how transformative and useful it can be when people begin to understand their emotions, rather than judging, fighting or avoiding them.
